Rating and value of Schneider glass parts

The house of Charles Scheider has produced creations that are totally unique. The most famous of these are the vases, often featured at auction. Nowadays, prices for these creations can rise considerably under the auctioneer's hammer. Their vases are particularly prized, by buyers from all over the world. The price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €30 to €15,000, at the moment, a substantial gap but one that says a lot about the value that can be attributed to the glass objects of the house. In 2021, a multi-layered glass bowl with acid decoration sold for €13,000, originally estimated at between €600 and €1,000.

Schneider style and technology

Schneider offers two distinct collections of glassware: French glass and the Schneider line, both of which are destined for different uses. The Scheider brothers are part of the Ecole de Nancy movement, in the vein of Émile Gallé, who will spread the Art Deco style.

The story of the Schneider brothers

The beginning of the Schneider glassworks is the fruit of collaboration. Charles Schneider and his brother Ernest were trained in the art of glassmaking in Nancy, at the Daum brothers' factory. There, they acquired a wide range of techniques, and in 1913 founded their own factory in Épinay sur Seine. Their business grew rapidly, and before the First World War, their creations were sold and exported all over the world. Charles Schneider soon took the helm of the family business, which is why his name is more widely remembered today. It was he who launched the two Schneider lines: French glass, aimed at the general public on an average budget, and the Schneider line, which is more luxurious but also more expensive. As most of the glassworks' buyers were American, the Great Depression of 1929 was to have a major impact on the company. In 1938, the company went bankrupt. Charles, who had had two children in the meantime, managed to save the company with their help.

The success of the French glass line

The success story of Schneider glass is due to the strategy of originality, but with mass production. However, the quality of the glass products remains high, which is why sales are so strong. The business strategy works: Schneider glassworks aims to compete with low-end German companies by offering mid-range products that are a little more expensive but still affordable. The price of French glass is high and stable today, with the most popular pieces being brightly-colored, multi-layered and acid-decorated. The most sought-after product remains the vase, but lamps and glass bowls are also highly prized on the auction market.

Recognizing the Schneider signature

Schneider lenses are signed. However, over the years, the signature has evolved. You can sometimes find the inscription "Schneider", the inscription "Charder", another name for the French glass line, or even a tricolored berlingot: that's why it's best to have them appraised.
