The artist's works and style
An artist who worked in the Landes region during the 20th century, Jean Roger Sourgen is a French painter influenced by the French Impressionists. His paintings are predominantly landscape scenes, representing reality fairly faithfully, but using broad flat tints of paint and very pastel shades. However, he does not claim to belong to any particular movement.
Jean Roger Sourgen: painting the Landes
Jean Roger Sourgen was born in 1883 in the south of France.
Very few details are known about his life and artistic output.
He mainly produced oil on canvas paintings, most likely exhibited in his native region of the Landes, where he spent his entire career. His canvases are impressionistic, though in some respects realistic. He works with flat tints of color, similar in some respects to the Pointillists. His preferred color is green, the fact being that Landes landscapes are predominantly composed of trees - though he also uses a lot of violet, to faithfully retranscribe the landscapes, working on representations of sunrise/sunset.
His gouache works are also highly prized, but generally achieve lower results than his oil paintings, as this format is more sought-after by collectors.
He died in 1978 in the Landes region.
Jean Roger Sourgen's imprint on his period
Jean Roger Sourgen did not make a lasting impact on the national scene, and was not very well known during his lifetime. However, some collectors appreciated his work, and the majority of his canvases are in private hands.
