A key figure in modern Indian painting, Akbar Padamsee is a prodigious twentieth-century painter whose reputation is based on his paintings, watercolor drawings, prints and sculptures. Abkar Padamsee is one of the pioneers of modern Indian painting. He uses several artistic techniques, including oil painting, painting on cardboard, acrylic, charcoal, printmaking and sculpture.

The life of Akbar Padamsee

Akbar Padamsee was born in Bombay in 1928, into a Guajarat family who belonged to a caste of artists, notably court musicians. His father was a real-estate businessman who also ran a furniture and glassware company. Akbar Padamsee began copying images from magazines at an early age, and learned watercolor techniques at high school. In Bombay, he meets the painter Raza, who becomes his friend and invites him to follow him to Paris. He met Stanley William Hayter, who became his mentor.

In 1954, he held his first exhibition in Bombay. His success was rapid, and his rise in Indian artistic circles was meteoric. Having achieved international renown, he took up an artistic residency at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and presented a monograph at the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal, which met with some success.

As an artist, he helps organize several contemporary art events and supports several Indian museums.

He died in 2020, aged 91.
