Artist's style and technique

Victor Tardieu is a twentieth-century artist with no particular movement. His work is strongly inspired by the Far East, and he produced impressionist works at the beginning of his career, but experimented with many pictorial genres. He used drawing and oil on canvas, which are more common on the auction market.

Tardieu, rising star of the art market

Victor Tardieu (1870-1937) was a French painter and draughtsman. Born in Orléans, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris at an early age, after studying at the Académie Julian. Léon Bonnat was his teacher for some time. His talent was soon noticed, and he exhibited in various Paris salons, collaborating with Félix Gaudin on stained-glass windows.

In the same year, he exhibited a large-format painting entitled Travail at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français, which won him the Salon's first national prize. This prize included a grant enabling him to travel for two years to Genoa, Liverpool and London. He found new inspiration, but this did not have a major influence on his career. However, his career took a major turn when he moved to Indochina, where he settled permanently after the Second World War. From then on, a Far Eastern flavour hung over his work, blending the pictorial techniques used in Indochina at the time with what he had learned from his studies in France.

Back in France, he helped decorate a number of buildings and contributed to frescoes.

He fought in the First World War, and produced a number of war paintings on his return from the front. In 1925, he founded the National School of Fine Arts in Indochina, now the Vietnamese School of Fine Arts, with Nguyen Nam Son. He then directed the school for eleven years, learning

He died in Vietnam at the age of 67.

Tardieu's imprint on his era

His career spanned several decades, and he was widely recognized for his contribution to twentieth-century art. He influenced and inspired many artists after him, and was widely disseminated in his day thanks to his status as Professor in Indochina. His work is highly regarded for its cross-disciplinary influence on French and Vietnamese art, as well as on the various trends of the 20th century.

Today, Victor Tardieu's works are very popular on the auction market. The price is high, but his works have great potential for auction results, and should therefore continue to rise.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Victor Tardieu sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, there are many copies, so expertise is essential.
