Vartan Makhokhian's career

Vartan Makhokhian (1869-1937) was an Armenian painter born in Trebizond.

His father, a merchant, encouraged him to study and supported his interest in drawing. Trained as a musician and then as a painter, he decided to devote his career exclusively to Art, and studied at the Beaux-Arts in Berlin. After graduating, he traveled to Crimea where he met Ivan Aivazovsky.

At this point in his career, he began to concentrate exclusively on marine paintings. He exhibited his work in Berlin for the first time in 1900. After the Hamidi massacres, he was forced to flee to Europe, and later traveled to Egypt to exhibit his work.

Before the First World War and the Armenian genocide, he moved to Nice and exhibited in Monte Carlo.

Marked by the genocide, he produced a series in memory of his people, The Sobbing of Armenia.

Vartan Makhokhian's imprint on his era

Vartan Makhokhian is one of the most sought-after marine painters at auction today, and his value is likely to rise sharply in the future. He didn't exhibit much in Europe during his lifetime, but with Orientalist works in such high demand today, it's the European market that now demands his paintings the most.
