A key figure in modern Indian painting, Sayed Haider Raza is a prodigious twentieth-century painter whose reputation is based on his paintings, watercolor drawings, prints and sculptures. For almost forty years, his works have been auctioned at prices ranging from €180 to €637,800, a substantial delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to the artist's works. One of his paintings (acrylic on canvas) entitled Gestation, dating from 1989, sold for €5,020,650 in 2023, whereas it was estimated at between €1,673,550 and €2,789,250.

Sayed Haider Raza is one of the pioneers of Indian abstract painting. He uses several artistic techniques, including oil paint, cardboard paint, acrylic, charcoal, printmaking and sculpture. He works extensively with colorimetry.

The life of Sayed Haider Raza   

Sayed Haider Raza was born in India in 1922, in Barbara, a province of the British colony of India. He began his artistic training at the Nagour School of Fine Arts, then at an art school in Bombay. With friends from the school, he founded the Progressive artist group, which had little posterity, influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He obtains a scholarship from the French government to study at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited in France and joined the École de Paris group, while making frequent trips to India. He worked extensively on colorimetry and the relief of paint layers.

He transformed an ancient château into an art center in the Alpes Maritimes with his wife at the end of his career, and died in New Delhi at the age of 94.
