Michel Larionov, twentieth-century Russian radiographer

Michel Larionov or Mikhail Larinov was a Russian artist born in Tiraspol in 1881.

He trained in Impressionism and Fauvism at the Moscow School of Painting, and was one of the first Russian artists to explore Rayonism.

He became close to Kasimir Malevitch, the Russian painter who experimented with abstraction in its most total form. He founded the Valet de Carreau group, then, after an argument with one of its members, the Queue d'Âne group, two circles designed to reflect on the plastic and intellectual issues of the avant-garde.

He wrote and published the Rayon manifesto in 1912, which stemmed from literary Futurism and aimed to represent in painting the movements and vibrations of matter-energy and radioactivity.

After meeting Sonia and Robert Delaunay, he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français, where he made his work known outside Russia.

He also designed sets for the Ballet Russe and died in 1964 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, aged 82.
