The artist's works and style

Maxime Noiré's works are characterized by their realistic style and warm tones. Influenced by the artistic movement of realism, as well as by the motifs and colors of Islamic and Berber art, his paintings often depict Algerian landscapes or the characters that have marked his life and inspiration. His compositions are well-balanced, the result of highly accomplished work on perspective.

Maxime Noiré: painting the Orient

Maxime Noiré was born in Moselle in 1861.

Like other painters of his era(Majorelle, Jouve...), he had no formal training in France. Noiré was completely self-taught and moved to Algeria in 1882 at the age of 21. There, he drew inspiration from the landscapes and Algerians he met, producing oil paintings characteristic of Orientalist painting. Étienne Doiret, an Orientalist painter of the same period, worked with him in his studio.

Famous for his work in his day, he was appointed painter to the French Navy and Colonies in 1905 by the French government. This title had little impact on his career, and he continued to receive approximately the same number of commissions. In the same years, he co-founded the Société des artistes algériens orientalistes. At the end of his career, journalist and critic Isabelle Edernhardt called Noiré "the painter of horizons ablaze and almond trees weeping".

He made a name for himself on the art scene far from France, through Orientalism (painting inspired by the Orient) - not an artistic movement in the strict sense of the word; Noiré's canvases were inspired by the pictorial techniques of his time, with a highly developed use of light. His paintings fall somewhere between realism and impressionism.

Maxime Noiré's imprint on his era

Maxime Noiré is one of the most sought-after Orientalist painters at auction today, and although his paintings don't fetch very high sums, it's very likely that his value will rise sharply in the future. He didn't exhibit much in Europe during his lifetime, but with Orientalist works in such high demand today, it's the European market that now demands his paintings the most.
