The life of Maqbool Fida Husain

Maqbool Fida Husain was born in India in 1915.

He moved to Bombay in 1935 to study at the city's art school. He began by producing film sets and joined Bombay's Progressive artists group, founded by Francis Newton Souza.

In 1952, he organized his first monograph in Zurich, Switzerland. He received various awards while continuing to work for the cinema: he was also a scriptwriter and still created film sets. By the 40s, his reputation had been established, and he became one of India's most highly regarded painters during his lifetime. Like his friend Souza, he created a scandal by depicting naked Hindu women. Some of his works were destroyed by Hindu activists who did not approve of his paintings and tapestries. Nevertheless, he produced a gigantic body of work (over 1,000 paintings have been offered for sale to date, not including drawings and prints).

He died in London at the age of 95, in 2011.

Husain's imprint on his period

Husain has left a significant mark on the history of twentieth-century art, and is one of his country's best-known painters. His considerable artistic output is the result of hard work and a long career. Husain is one of the most highly-rated contemporary artists on the art market today.
