Mahmoud Said: painting Egypt

Mahmoud Said (1897-1964) was an Egyptian painter born in Alexandria.

His father was the country's prime minister at the time of his birth. He had a happy childhood and received a good education. In 1919, he obtained a degree in French law, and moved to Paris to continue his studies. He visited many European museums and took painting lessons.

Back in Egypt, he attended the Cairo School of Fine Arts while working at the Alexandria Public Prosecutor's Office, graduating as a judge. He contributed to the renewal of twentieth-century art in Egypt, and in 1937 managed to exhibit at the Rockerfeller in New York, then in the Egyptian pavilion at the Exposition des Arts et des Techniques Appliqués à la Vie Moderne.

When he married, he drew much of his inspiration from his wife, and later from his children. The representation of women in general remained a central theme in his work.

He also depicts peasants and scenes from everyday life in his homeland.

Mahmoud Said died in Egypt in 1964.
