Joaquin Torres Garcia, a major figure of the École de Paris

Joaquin Torres Garcia is a Spanish and Uruguayan artist of the École de Paris, born in Montevideo in 1874.

His father came from Mataro in Spain, where he spent his childhood. In 1891, he moved with his family to Barcelona, where he studied at the School of Fine Arts. After meeting Picasso in a cabaret, he moved to Paris, where he formed the Cercle et Carré group with Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Its aim was to produce new theories and reflect on the new implications and issues of the changes taking place in contemporary art at the beginning of the 20th century. However, he disagreed with the group's move towards abstraction, and decided to leave.

In 1903, he was commissioned to create stained glass windows for Palma de Mallorca Cathedral, which drew heavily on the rosette motif.

In the 20s, following the influence of Picasso, his work turned towards Cubism. In search of a new setting and new influences, he moved to New York.

In the 1930s, he broke away from Western theories and chose to draw his inspiration from Egyptian, pre-Columbian and African art.

In 1943, he opened a workshop for constructivist techniques, where he trained numerous students.

Torres Garcia died in 1949, while preparing two future exhibitions.
