The artist's works and style

Jean Souverbine is one of the leading figures of figuratism, which is an umbrella term for a variety of productions that seek to represent reality. Pointillist, impressionist and realist tendencies are all present. He works mainly in drawing and oil on canvas, but has also produced a number of prints.

The life of Jean Souverbie

Jean Souverbie (1891 - 1981) was a French figurative painter.

Born in Boulogne-Billancourt, he painted nudes and still lifes without any particular training at first. He took a few lessons from a private teacher. He began drawing at the age of ten, inspired by Rembrandt's etchings. Maurice Denis noticed his work as early as 1908. He entered the Académie Julian, then the Académie Ranson, where he frequented the Nabis. During the First World War, he was discharged for being physically too weak.

He continued to paint throughout his life, and his wife became his favorite model. After an operation that allowed him to recover, he turned his pictorial production towards cubism.

He died in Paris at the age of 90.
