Harold Speed, his life, his work

Harold Speed (1872-1957) was an English painter who produced genre scenes, landscape paintings and portraits.

He was born in London - to an architect father, probably thanks to whom he studied architecture at the Royal College of Art. The first art did not suit him so well, so he turned to the Beaux-Arts and began training at the Royal Academy, where he learned painting.

In 1916, he became a member of the Art Workers Guild, and was elected Master. Close to the Arts and Crafts movement, its aim was to promote the unity of all the arts, without distinction. It was a modern gamble that Speed embodied to perfection in his work and his theory of drawing. He published several works explaining the practice and science of drawing. Although focused on his artistic production, he did not forget the geometric and mathematical aspects of the work of art, which he had particularly acquired through his training in architecture. In 1907, the artist organized his first solo exhibition at the Leicester Galleries. He took part in the art competition for the 1928 Summer Olympics.

He died in London in 1957.

Harold Speed's imprint on his era

Harold Speed left his mark on his era, and his work is still of interest today and prized by some collectors. Many artists have drawn on his theories and manuals on the role of drawing and its science in art.

Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a major role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.
