Georges Lapchine's style and technique

Georges Lapchine belongs to the École de Paris group, like other artists (Michel Kikoine, Alessio Isupoff, Nicolas de Staël) who immigrated from Russia to Paris, although this term is far too broad to give a precise definition of his work. He fits in with the Russian Impressionist artists, producing mainly oils on canvas.

The life of Georges Lapchine

Georgij Alexandrovich Lapsin (1885 - 1951) was a Russian artist of the École de Paris.

The artist was born in Moscow, and trained in painting, particularly oil on canvas, at the Stroganov Academy. In an extremely complicated socio-political context unfavorable to artists as we know it, Lapchine was forced to leave his native country and emigrate to France, where he spent most of his career. In 1924, he settled permanently in Paris, where he studied in Fernand Cormon's studio alongside the Russian painter Michel Kikoine, who had also been torn from his roots.

Like other artists from the Russian Empire, Lapchine was deeply attached to ballet culture, which was very present in Russia. He therefore produced sets for these shows, as well as for the theater. During his career, he decorated the Sésame cabaret in Monte-Carlo and the Folies-Bergères in Paris.

In his paintings, he depicts an idealized Russia, making - as his era demanded - consistent use of light and the simplicity of the figures he portrays.

His painting Après la messe, commencement du Printemps en Russie (After Mass, the Beginning of Spring in Russia) was featured prominently in the sale, and at the same time, his release from the Arman Petrossian collection, which also included works by Constantin Korovine.

He died in 1951.

Georges Lapchine's imprint on his period

Georges Lapchine is not a well-known painter, either in his lifetime or today. His paintings of women and other compositions are, however, popular with collectors and have a certain success at auction. Some of his works are exhibited in museums in France, but private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.
