The artist's works and style

Amrita Sher-Gil's style is characterized by a bold use of color and geometric shapes. Fascinated by the relationship between shapes and colors, she explored how they could interact and create optical effects. She was inspired by Western art early in her career, but returned to a more Indian influence in the 1930s.

The life of Amrita Sher-Gil

Amrita Sher-Gil was born in Budapest in 1913, a Hungarian-Indian artist. Her father was an Indian aristocrat, while her mother was a Hungarian opera singer. She traveled to India during her childhood, but spent most of it in Budapest, then moved to Shimla, India for two years before leaving for Florence, where she studied at an art school. She traveled to Europe with her mother to train as a painter, notably in Paris, where she took classes at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. At the start of her career, she produced mainly portraits, mixing realist and post-impressionist influences.

Eager to reconnect with traditional Indian art, she moved back to Shimla, and traveled throughout India to learn more about her country's artistic practices. She ended her career in the Uttlar Pradesh region, where she painted rural India.

Her first major exhibition took place in Lahore in 1941, but she fell ill and died a few days before the opening.
