The life of Michel Kikoine

Michel Kikoine (1892 - 1968) was a Russian artist of the École de Paris.

He was born in Gomel, in the Russian Empire, and took an early interest in painting. In 1905, he met the famous painter Chaïm Soutine in a studio, and studied with him at the Vilnius School of Fine Arts. A rising star of his time, during his Russian studies he also met Pinchus Krémègne, another promising Russian artist. Like many of them, he moved to Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, following the political turmoil in his country. From 1912, he frequented Fernand Cormon's studio, then moved two years later to the Ruche artists' housing estate, where many of the Ecole de Paris painters lived.

In 1919, he exhibited for the first time at the Galerie Chéron, and was immediately noticed by the art critic Montlaur. With Soutine, he travels around France, painting in Cagnes sur mer. He eventually settled in Yonne. The two artists influenced each other, and Kikoine also learned from and re-used Pierre Bonnard and some of the Fauvists' work, though without the same extravagance.

During and after the Second World War, attached to his Jewish upbringing and influences, he produced a series of color lithographs entitled Enfants d'Israël (Children of Israel) at the end of his career, following trips to Israel.

Michel Kikoine's imprint on his period

Michel Kikoine is not a well-known painter, either in his lifetime or today. His landscape paintings are, however, appreciated by collectors and have a certain success at auction. Some of his works are exhibited in museums in France, but private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.

His signature

Not all of Michel Kikoine's works are signed. It is also possible that the work is a copy, or that the inscription has faded over time, which is why expert appraisal is essential.
