The life of Aristide Maillol

Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) was a French artist, famous for his work as a painter, draughtsman, sculptor and engraver. He is best known as a member of the Nabis group.

Born in Banyuls sur Mer, his aunt raised him from birth. He studied at the Lycée Saint Louis de Gonzague in Perpignan, and moved to Paris at the end of his secondary education. He began his artistic training in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme, then Adolphe Yvon. He befriended Antoine Bourdelle. His fascination with the Lady of the Unicorn tapestry led him to open a weaving workshop in his hometown. He later joined the Nabis group, where he met Maurice Denis and Paul Gauguin, who were to become his friends.

From 1900, he produced his first sculptures, which impressed Auguste Rodin. Mirbeau, an influential art critic of the time, bought Léda from the Vollard gallery.

He achieved great success at the 1905 Salon with his bronze sculpture La Méditerranée. The Harry Keesler account commissions his work, launching his career internationally. He became his first patron. Maurice Denis introduced him to Ivan Morossov, who also commissioned his work.

After Rodin's death, Maillol was considered one of France's greatest sculptors.

At the end of his career, he carried out many public commissions, and several of his bronze statues can be seen in the Tuileries Gardens. Retrospectives in his honor have been organized in Basel and New York.

In 1944, while visiting Raoul Dufy, he died in a car accident.
