The life of Diego Giacometti

Swiss artist Diego Giacometti (1901-1966) became an important figure in the art world of the 20th century, and was one of the most sought-after sculptors of his time.

He was born in Borgonovo into a family of artists. Bruno Giacometti, his brother, was an architect, and his other brother, Alberto, was a sculptor who worked with him all his life.

His father was a post-impressionist painter, who encouraged his children early on to produce and find their own way.

He began his artistic training in Basel, then moved to Paris, where he studied at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

From then on, he worked with bronze, which gave him remarkable maneuverability and elasticity. He cast them in lost wax, often sculpting animals. His ostrich is particularly famous, sculpted from an egg given to him by his teacher Jean-Paul Binet for lack of use. So Diego Giacometti sculpted a bronze ostrich into which he inserted the egg.

He carries out commissions for various collectors and art lovers.

Diego Giacometti's imprint on his period

Diego Giacometti proved in France that surrealist sculpture was an important part of twentieth-century art history. On today's art market, his works are highly prized, and his bronzes even more so.
