Artist Ablade Glover's style and technique

Ablade Glover is included in the figurative art denomination, which is not very precise. An art journalist described his work in New African Magazine as "swirling between abstraction and realism". The rendering is indeed very abstract, but the subjects he draws on are very real. He uses very warm colors, with lots of red, green and yellow in his compositions.

The life of Ablade Glover, a leading figure in African painting

Ablade Glover is a renowned contemporary Ghanaian artist, born on November 6, 1934 in Accra, Ghana. He is best known for his colorful, expressive art, which often depicts scenes of daily life, bustling markets, musicians, dancers and African cityscapes.

Glover is a prolific artist who has made a significant contribution to the evolution of contemporary art in West Africa. His work has been exhibited and collected worldwide, and he is considered one of the most influential African artists of his generation.

He taught art at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, where he also headed the art department for a time.

Glover's mark on his period

He undeniably left his mark on his period and trained many artists. On the advice of one of his teachers, he abandoned the brush to paint with a knife, as Eugène Leroy and Jacques Germain did in France.

In this way, he was able to modernize African painting through his influence on both technique and abstraction, which he introduced to new artists when teaching in Ghana.

Recognizing Ablade Glover's signature

Ablade Glover's paintings are often signed in the lower left-hand corner. He signs "A. G." often in a dark tone, but the inscriptions are not very recognizable, which is why it's important to have your painting appraised.
