Lalique, from François Coty to the Orient Express
René Lalique was born on April 6, 1860. Talented from an early age, his vocation was revealed when he won a design competition organized by his high school. At just 16, Lalique was apprenticed to Parisian jeweler Louis Aucoc, then left for London to study at Sydenham Art College. On his return to France, he worked with such famous names as Cartier and Boucheron.
In 1885, Lalique opened his own jewelry boutique on Place Vendôme. His stand at the 1900 Paris World's Fair was a resounding success.
Ten years later, Lalique began creating glass perfume bottles, starting withAmbre Antique for François Coty.
In 1921, he opened a glassworks in Alsace, like the Daum brothers and Emile Gallé, and his creations attracted attention. He was called upon for prestigious projects such as the interior decoration of luxury liners like the Normandie and the De Grasse. He also embellished luxury trains such as theOrient-Express.
He also created the stained-glass windows, communion table and altar entirely in glass for the Saint-Nicaise church in Reims.
The artist's works and style
Lalique is recognized as one of France's most influentialArt Nouveau jewelry designers. He distinguished himself by highlighting animals and plants in his creations, while using materials uncommon for the time, such as glass, leather, mother-of-pearl, enamel and precious stones.
