Dom Robert, Aubusson tapestry

Dom Robert, religious upholsterer

Dom Robert (1907 - 1997) was born in the Vienne region of France. His birth name was Guy de Chaunac-Lanzac.

He studies at the Jesuit College in Poitiers, and at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He produces drawings for Ducharne silks, whose graphic workshop is in Paris. He met Jacques Maritain and Maxime Jacob. In 1937, he was ordained a priest. In 1941, he met French upholsterer Jean Lurçat. This encouraged him to start producing tapestries with a workshop in Aubusson. In 1948, he left France for Buckfast Abbey in England. He continued to produce tapestry cartoons until the end of his life, dying there in 1997. In all, he produced over a hundred tapestries, while remaining true to his mission as a priest.

The artist's works and style

Dom Robert explored several artistic genres and painting techniques. Above all, he produced tapestries, drawings and sometimes ceramics, a technique he also mastered.

The Aubusson factory produced almost all of these tapestries. Others have since been produced, and these pieces can be found on the auction market.

His signature

Not all Dom Robert's works are signed. He often signed "F. Robert" for Frère Robert.

Although there are variations, here is a first example of its signature:
