The life of Fernandez Arman

Fernandez Arman, or Armand Fernandez, is a Franco-American artist who uses manufactured objects as a pictorial and sculptural technique.

He was born in Nice into a family of antique dealers. He began his artistic training at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Nice in 1928, and met Yves Klein and Claude Pascal at the gym they all frequented. He produced works at a very early age, signing his first name in a hidden tribute to Van Gogh. At an exhibition at Iris Clert, he makes his artist's signature "Arman" official by dropping the "d" from his first name. At the same gallery, he organizes an exhibition entitled "Le Plein", echoing Yves Klein's "Le Vide" of two years earlier. With Klein, he founded the Nouveaux Réalistes group, later joined by César. From the 60s onwards, he lived between New York and Nice, always interested in the materiality of objects and the theme of overconsumption.

His Accumulations are his best-known works, characterized by piles of various objects. HisColères series, in which he destroys objects, is also particularly famous.

He died in New York in 2005, aged 76.
