The life of Zoran Music

Zoran Mušič (1909-2005) was a renowned Slovenian and Yugoslav painter. He is best known for his work as a visual witness to the Holocaust and the horrors of the Dachau concentration camp during the Second World War. His paintings and drawings depict the suffering, distress and desolation of concentration camp prisoners.

Music lived much of his life in Italy and France, where he developed an artistic style that integrates expressionism and symbolism. His works go beyond realistic representation, immortalizing the emotions and profound experiences of the individual in the face of the worst moments of history.

Throughout his career, Music was recognized for his contribution to European art, and received numerous honors and distinctions. His paintings remain a poignant and powerful testimony to the human tragedies of the Second World War.

He died in Venice at the age of 94, and devoted his life to leaving a body of work that depicts and conveys the horror of the concentration camps. He used very dark tones, blurred lines and livid, even corpse-like portraits. He also depicts the corpses he painted during his imprisonment in the Dachau camp. After emerging from the hell, bruised and traumatized, he continued to paint the horror, to remember, to heal, and for the world to remember after him.

Zoran Music's legacy

Zoran Music has left behind a scathing and remarkable body of work, a witness to history in the same way as Primo Lévi or Robert Antelme have done in literature.

Other artists such as Maurice Mendjisky have depicted these tragic moments. Music has dedicated his life to the memory of these events. Today, his works are highly prized on the auction market, and many private collectors seek him out.
