The life of Jean Buhot
Jean Buhot (1885-1952) was a French artist and art historian specializing in Far Eastern painting.
He grew up in a family of artists: his father was a painter (especially an aquaforist) and his mother was completely devoted to him. He took up painting at an early age with his father, and was even one of his models.
After graduating from high school, he traveled around the world and attended a number of workshops, all the while graduating with a degree in English. He married the sister of one of his colleagues before being mobilized to the front in 1914, and discovered his vocation as an art historian and painter late after the war, under the influence of his wife, who introduced him to Far Eastern painting.
He then became interested in this specialty and taught it at the Ecole du Louvre, while also producing paintings. He has written several books on the theme of East Asia in his capacity as a professor and specialist.
The artist's works and style
Jean Buhot's work is characterized by perpetual experimentation with Far Eastern painting. Today, he is not well known to the general public, but appreciated and sought after by collectors.
Although some of his paintings and drawings are held in museums in France and around the world, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.
