Arshile Gorky, Still Life Red And Yellow,1930, oil on canvas

Artist Arshile Gorky's style and technique

Arshile Gorky mainly painted abstract compositions, using watercolors as well as pencil. He mixed techniques and drew inspiration from political events in the United States, as well as from his mother, who died during the 1918 famine in Armenia.

The life of Arshile Gorky

Arshile Gorky (1904 - 1948), an Armenian artist, became an important figure in the world of 20th-century art, highly prized at auction.

Born near Lake Van in the Ottoman Empire, he fled the Armenian genocide. He moves with his family to Everan, in Russian Armenia. His mother died of famine in the winter of 1918. In 1920, he joined his father in Boston and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, near Providence. In 1925, he moved to New York to study at the Grand Central School of Art, where he became a professor. He followed the work of Cézanne and Picasso, and was inspired by Cézannean and Analytical Cubism in his early works.

By 1930, he had gained recognition.

He was familiar with the New Deal and received public commissions at the time, notably for Newark airport.

During the Second World War, he met André Breton, in exile in New York, who took notice of his work.

He had a very difficult end to his life and career: his wife left him, his studio was burnt down, as a result of which he lost part of his production, and he was diagnosed with cancer at a late stage. He underwent surgery but never recovered, committing suicide in 1948 at the age of 44.
