Style and technique of artist Joseph Czaky

Joseph Czaky uses a variety of materials in his sculptures, including marble, bronze and granite for the stones. He belonged to various currents: cubism, the De Stijl group, purism, abstract art and figurative art. The style of his work evolved throughout his career.

Joseph Czaky's career

Joseph Alexandre Czaky, born in Hungary in 1888, was one of the first sculptors of the Cubist movement, part of the Hungarian avant-garde.

He began training in sculpture at the age of 14 at the Budapest School of Decorative Arts. However, he didn't like the training and left at 16 to learn stone-cutting directly on building sites.

Very poor, he moved to Paris to pursue his career, staying with Hungarian friends. He then moved to La Ruche. In 1910, he exhibited his first works at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1912, he exhibited his group of women alongside Jean Metzinger and Francis Picabia at the Salon d'Automne, but the work caused a scandal and he was banned from exhibiting again at the institution. The following year, however, he met with success at the Salon des Indépendants. He enlisted in the French army in 1914 and stopped his artistic production until the end of the war.

Léonce Rosenberg, director of the Galerie de l'Effort Moderne, offered him an exclusive contract in 1919. His works began to be collected worldwide. After 1928, he decided to move away from cubism and work exclusively on the representation of the female body.

In 1930, he was a founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes, and presented some of his works at their first exhibition in the Pavillon de Marsan. At the end of his career, he exhibited two plaster casts for the Musée National d'Art Moderne's exhibition on Cubism.

He died in 1971 at the Hôpital Bichat, aged 83.
