The life of Yüksel Arslan

Yüksel Arslan is a Turkish artist born in Eyüp, Turkey.

He attended the German Gymnasium in Istanbul and studied art history at the University of Istanbul. There, he studied the works of Paul Klee, Jean Dubuffet and André Breton. In 1950, he began his own production of drawings and paintings.

André Breton invited him to take part in the 1959 Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme, but he was not among the exhibitors and moved to Paris in 1961. He played with words and syllables to title his works, and adapted cave paintings to paper. He also used mixtures of earth and natural organic elements to create his canvases and drawings. He exhibited extensively in France and Turkey, with a retrospective devoted to him in Istanbul and others to follow, culminating in a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou.
