Artist's style and technique

Michel Kikoine is a member of the École de Paris, a group of foreign artists who produced work in Paris.

Most of his work is Expressionist, and he produced many oils on canvas, as well as drawings and prints.

The life of Michel Kikoine

Mickhaïl Kikoïne was a Franco-Russian artist born in 1892 in Gomel, in the Russian Empire.

He began his artistic training in a studio in Minsk, capital of Belarus, in 1905. There he met Chaïm Soutine, with whom he later studied at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Around 1914, he moved to Paris and settled in La Ruche, where his two children were born.

Kikoine had his first solo exhibition in 1919 at the Galerie Chéron. He was noticed by art critics and collectors. He settled in the Yonne region, where he worked regularly with Soutine, and met dealers through Amedeo Modiglianiwhich further enhanced his reputation.

He worked in Toulouse with his son and other artists during the Second World War, then at the end of his career produced marine paintings inspired by the Mediterranean region, and also published a collection of lithographs entitled Les enfants d'Israël.

He died in Paris in 1968, aged 76.

Michel Kikoine is not a well-known painter, either in his lifetime or today. His landscape paintings are, however, appreciated by collectors and have a certain success at auction. Some of his works are exhibited in museums in France, but private collectors play a major role in preserving his work. His value has been rising in recent years.
