The artist's works and style

The art market is full of Méheut's graphic works. In addition to pencil drawings, his output includes a variety of charcoal drawings, gouaches, watercolors, as well as a few sanguines and pastels. These works generally depict the marine world, its fauna and flora, and fishing-related activities.

The artist also paints with oils, casein, or milk paint, to create works with a velvety texture and a distinctive matte finish.

Throughout his career, Méheut was involved in numerous decorative projects, with an emphasis on tableware. His ceramic creations include a variety of services, tableware and shaped objects such as plates, pitchers, ashtrays and small decorative sculptures, often depicting Breton women. The "service de la mer" is particularly famous and sought-after.

Mathurin Méheut was born in Lamballe in 1882 into a family of craftsmen. He started out as a house painter, before exploring drawing and entering the École des Beaux-Arts in Rennes and then Paris.

Mathurin Méheut made a name for himself as a decorative painter for various magazines and illustrated famous books. His passion for seascapes led him to create a major work entitled "Étude de la mer". He also explored image reproduction techniques. After the First World War, he turned his attention to earthenware, working with several renowned manufacturers. Mathurin Méheut left an undeniable mark on the visual arts and decoration.

Throughout his artistic career, Mathurin Méheut drew inspiration from his native Brittany. As an illustrator, decorator and through an abundance of written testimonials, he immortalized the region's marine flora and fauna, landscapes and people.
