The artist's works and style

Influenced by the artistic movements of his time, such as Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism and Synthetism, Louis Anquetin's style is characterized by bold use of color, strong contours and a keen eye for light.

Through his works, Louis Anquetin wanted to move away from realism and depict the atmosphere, feelings and emotions of the scene. His choice of vivid colors made his compositions expressive and dynamic.

The life of Louis Anquetin

Born in Etrépagny in 1861, Louis Anquetin studied in Rouen. Interested in painting, the young man arrived in Paris in 1882 and entered the studio of artist Léon Bonnat as an apprentice. Later, Anquetin joined Fernand Cormon's studio, where he made friends with the great names of his time, such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Emile Bernard and Vincent Van Gogh.

A bold and innovative painter, Louis Anquetin is known as the founder of Cloisonnisme. After briefly trying his hand at Impressionism during a visit to Monet, Anquetin and Émile Bernard turned to Signac's Divisionism, giving birth to Cloisonnisme with its distinct contours. Inspired byUkiyo-e, Anquetin created a new aesthetic of purity and color.

Later, he returned to a traditional style, creating sets for the Théâtre Antoine. Until his death in 1932, Anquetin aspired to an ideal painting style, influenced by Michelangelo and Rubens.
