The artist's works and style

Jean Metzinger's artistic career is divided into several parts, reflecting his different influences and inspirations. Indeed, before becoming part of the Cubist movement for which he is now famous, Metzinger began as a Neo-Impressionist and then a Fauvist. During this period, the artist painted views of Paris, landscapes and portraits. The colors used in his compositions were bright and bold.

Jean Metzinger's canvases then become increasingly deconstructed until they become fully Cubist.

Despite his great artistic evolution, Jean Metzinger retained his favorite themes of portraits, nature and landscapes.

The life of Jean Metzinger

Jean Metzinger was born in Nantes in 1883. After studying at the local Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Metzinger pursued his artistic career in Paris, the home of emerging young artists.

Initially influenced by the Neo-Impressionist and Fauvist movements, the young artist turned to Cubism. Metzinger was one of the first to adopt this new movement, described as revolutionary. Nevertheless, his style is distinguished from other cubist artists by its combination of geometric forms and figurative objects.

As well as being an active member of the artistic movement, Jean Metzinger was one of Cubism's leading theorists. In particular, he wrote Du Cubisme, the group's first major treatise.

Throughout his career, Jean Metzinger participated in numerous exhibitions, becoming an active member of the Paris art scene. Less well known to the general public than Braque and Picasso, Metzinger was responsible for the development of Cubism as a major movement in art history.
