Rating and artist's value Fernand Verhaegen

A forgotten Impressionist painter of his time, Verhaegen leaves behind a unique artistic identity. This legacy consists mainly of drawings and paintings. Today, prices for his works are rising under the auctioneer's hammer, while his stock is stable. His canvases and other works are particularly prized, especially by Belgian buyers, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €10 to €17,000, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Fernand Verhaegen's works. An oil on canvas entitled Le port de Monaco, dating from 1923 sold for €17,000.

Artist's style and technique

Fernand Verhaegen is part of the Impressionist movement, but some of his works are also pointillist or realist. He was influenced by the French Impressionists. He mainly produced oil paintings and drawings.

The life of Fernand Verhaegen

Fernand Verhaegen, whose real name was Fernand Verraghen, was a painter and aquafortist born in Belgium in 1883. He lost his parents at an early age, and few details are known about his youth. In 1900, he moved to Brussels to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Here he met Rik Wouters and Edgar Tytgat.

He was soon exhibiting his work all over Belgium: Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent... When the First World War broke out, he went into exile in England, where he continued to paint, then travelled to Paris and the Côte d'Azur. In 1920 and 1922, he exhibited at the Venice Biennale.

His work and style evolved over the course of his career; his pointillist canvases are reminiscent of Georges Seurat, but his style is more closely related to Kees Van Dongen.

He died in Belgium in 1975.

Verhaegen's imprint on his time

Fernand Verhaegen left an important artistic legacy, reflecting Belgian society and culture in the 20th century. His works are on display in many prestigious art collections around the world, although he is little known to the general public.

Today, his works are still successful at auction. Although some of his works are held in museums in Europe, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Fernand Verhaegen sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, there are a few copies, so expertise is essential.
