Boggio and Impressionism

Emile Boggio was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1857. As his mother was French, the Boggio family moved to Paris in 1862. From an early age, Boggio enjoyed painting and drawing. In 1873, he returned to Caracas to go into business and take over the family firm. He returned to France a few years later for health reasons. He was admitted to the Académie Julian in Paris, where he rubbed shoulders with the Impressionist painters of the day.

Boggio participated in many artists' salons. Some of his works met with great success, enabling him to join the studios of many painters, notably Claude Monet.

In 1918, Boggio returned to Venezuela to teach the technique of Impressionism to the country's young artists, so that they could emancipate themselves from academic art.

Emile Boggio is also the creator of an important series of photographs.

The works and style of Emile Boggio

Emile Boggio was recognized by his peers. He received the support and influence of many great artists, including Renoir.

We can divide his art into three distinct periods, reflecting different influences and inspirations:

The first phase of his Symbolist-oriented art concerns all his works produced before 1900. This period is marked by the influence of Pierre Puvis de Chavanne: the borrowing of a technical vocabulary and the canons of academic iconography. This style marked the beginning of his success.

Because of their rarity, works from the Symbolist period are highly sought-after on the art market, and can fetch tens of thousands of euros at auction.

Post-Impressionism characterizes the second period of Boggio's art. The artist drew inspiration from such greats as Claude Monet and Van Gogh, and sought light in his composition.

His works are mainly landscapes. Appreciated by collectors, his paintings are commonplace in auction rooms and can fetch over €10,000.

Boggio's latest artistic influence is photography. Indeed, the artist produced a large number of snapshots. This medium was with him all his life.

His shots are still rare and virtually non-existent on the market.
