Artist's style and technique

Manessier's output is highly varied, and goes beyond the sacred art for which he is famous. After the war, he returned to his roots with abstract landscape paintings and concentrated on lithography, used as cartoons for his tapestries.

Identified as expressive abstraction, Manessier's works are characterized by a bold use of color, dynamic gestures, a strong focus on the representation of light and space, and the presence of spiritual references. In this way, the artist's work reflects a deep sensitivity and a quest for personal artistic expression.

The life of Alfred Manessier

Alfred Manessier is a French artist born in 1911. Particularly interested in painting, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Amiens and then in Paris. In 1932, he discovered and was immediately fascinated by the art of Piet Mondrian, founder of Neoplasticism. It was a turning point in his career, and a wake-up call.

From 1937 onwards, Alfred Manessier frequented avant-garde artists and created monumental decorations under the direction of the Delaunays, who initiated a distinctive abstract movement dubbed "orphism" by Guillaume Apollinaire. Initially influenced by the cubist and surrealist movements, his painting became resolutely abstract in reaction to Nazi censorship, while German demagogues regarded abstract expressionism as "degenerate art".

He was also a member of the De Stijl group of abstract painters.

After the war, Alfred Manessier's reputation grew thanks to the success of some of his paintings, acquired by the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes in 1947. He then devoted himself to creating stained-glass windows for churches, developing his interest in sacred art. His stained-glass creations in France and Europe were very popular, notably the windows of the Saint Sépulcre d'Abbeville in 1993.

Alfred Manessier's imprint on his time

Although his art was marked by thaumaturgical and ecclesiastical belief, abstraction and nature, Manessier refused to be labeled a religious painter. Towards the end of his career, he produced politically engaged paintings, denouncing the violence of the Algerian and Vietnam wars, and advocating social peace, in a dynamic protest movement. His paintings, often entitled Hommage, contributed to his recognition by the general public.
