Style and technique of the artist Mathurin Janssaud

Mathurin Janssaud produces oils on canvas, but works mainly with watercolors. He also produces a lot of watercolors, and works little with prints. His favorite subject is the sea, boats and the ports of Brittany.

The life of Mathurin Janssaud

Mathurin Janssaud (1857-1940), a French artist, was born in Manosque, in the Alpes de Haute-Provence. He didn't stay long, leaving the region at an early age to train as an artist in Paris.

It was there that he discovered several works and artists, including paintings inspired by Breton landscapes. He was fascinated by these representations and chose to make them his sole source of artistic inspiration.

Janssaud settled in Concarneau, Brittany, and worked with a group of painters known as the Concarneau Group. There were eleven of them, and they painted coastal seascapes, boats and harbors. They worked on light, depicting sunrises and sunsets. He had a fairly bourgeois audience and sometimes depicted women in his canvases and watercolors.

He did not have a great posterity, but one of his paintings is conserved at Orsay. He is not very famous today, but his works are appreciated on the auction market. The artist's value peaked in the 1990s, when many of his works were offered for sale.

He is part of a realist movement, like Krachkowsky or Bessonov.

Janssaud's imprint on his period

Mathurin Janssaud didn't really make his mark in his day. He is better known in Brittany, where he worked all his life. Nevertheless, his works remain popular on the auction market, and their value, though lower than twenty years ago, is stable.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Not all of Janssaud's works are signed. They may be at the bottom of the painting, but if you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised to be sure of its originality.
