Designer's style and technique

Clément Rousseau's neoclassical style was very popular at the beginning of the 20th century. His work enjoyed a rapid and dazzling success, due to the elegant design of his furniture and his sense of aesthetics. He is particularly renowned for his mastery of shagreen.

Clément Rousseau, designer of antique styles

Clément Rousseau was born in Deux-Sèvres in 1872.

Initially interested in sculpture and drawing at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, he soon turned to furniture and interior design.

He soon distinguished himself from the other students and joined Pierre Legrain's team at designer Jacques Doucet's studio in Paris. His work was quickly noticed, and he became a sought-after artist. Like Paul Dupré-Lafon, he received prestigious commissions from the Duchesse de Vendôme and the Rothschild family.

Rousseau's success is due not only to his style, which advocates a return to the classical styles of the 18th and 19th centuries, but also to his exceptional techniques and materials, such as ebony and violet wood, used by the greatest decorators before him (such as Boulle).

He also inlaid his creations with relatively precious elements in demand at the time, such as copper and ivory.

He died in 1950 in the Paris region.

The legacy of Clément Rousseau

Clément Rousseau has left a notable legacy in the field of French design, with emblematic pieces that are rare on the market and rarely found at auction, where records multiply. His work is characterized by great diversity and remarkable richness: pedestal tables, boxes, desks, lamps... His creations are extremely popular in today's interior design trends.
