Armand Albert Rateau, designer of antique styles

Armand Albert Rateau was born in Paris in 1882.

Initially interested in sculpture and drawing, the young designer trained as a decorator at the École Boulle, which explains his attraction to antique styles and his classical conception of furniture.

He worked for decorator Georges Hoentschel for some time, before being appointed artistic director of Alavoine et Compagnie at the age of 23.

In 1919, the artist decided to set up on his own in Paris. Already in possession of a private mansion and buoyed by the success of his furniture, he opened a workshop in Levallois of almost 1,000 square meters, employing over 200 craftsmen and decorators.

Rateau's inspirations include Antiquity, the Orient and neoclassical styles. He collaborated with couturier Jeanne-Marie Lanvin, who gave him a clear idea of the aesthetic path he should follow.

His career was extremely prolific, and his furniture attracted a large number of customers, leading to increasing expansion of his workshops throughout his career.

He died in Paris at the age of 55.
