Rating and value of Axel Salto's works

Axel Salto is a French artist well known to collectors of ceramics and sculpture. If you own one of his works, it may be worth more than you think. On the art market, Salto's works can fetch very high prices under the auctioneer's hammer.

His ceramic works are particularly prized by Danish and European buyers, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €10 to €389,480, a fairly substantial range, but one that says a lot about the value that can be attributed to Salto's works. In 2012, a vase in the "budding" style dating from 1944 sold for €389,480, whereas it was estimated at between €100,510 and €125,640, more than twice the low estimate.

The life of Axel Salto

Axel Salto is a ceramist born in 1889, little known to the uninitiated but regarded as a major figure in twentieth-century fire art. He was born in Copenhagen and began ceramics in 1911. In 1916, he travelled to Paris and exhibited his work there. After exchanges with Picasso and Matisse, he returned to Denmark in search of a solid structure and pure, monumental color tones in his work, which he summed up in the term "essence of art". With other painters and artists, he founded the short-lived De Fire group.

In 1925, Axel Salto really began his career by exhibiting at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs Industriels et Modernes, and made a name for himself in France. The Danish company Bing & Grodhal commissioned several collections from him following this event. Over the course of his career, he produced more than 3,000 stoneware pieces. Works published by Royal Copenhagen are often found on the market, as it was his main publisher.

Axel Salto on the auction market

Salto's works are often abstract, featuring intricate geometric patterns or uniquely shaped animals, but also inspired by plants and seaweed.

There is no longer a monopoly factory or gallery marketing Salto's work. As a result, the auction market is a privileged avenue for acquiring one of his works. They are very popular at auction, and whether it's a stoneware sculpture, an animal model, a ceramic bowl or some other work, they are all in demand.
