Georges Jouve's style and technique
Georges Jouve doesn't fit into any predefined trend, but produces a highly singular body of work and runs his own workshop. Almost all his work is ceramic, on which he likes to apply color. Throughout his career, he has sculpted vases in a variety of forms.
Cylindrical vases are the least sought-after, but still achieve significant auction results. Ovoid vases, and especially "pebble" vases, are prized for their unique and remarkable enameling work, while rarer vases and models only are naturally the best sellers.
The life of Georges Jouve
Georges Jouve (1910-1964), French ceramist, produced unique, elegant and original ceramic works. He was born in Fontenay-sous-Bois into a family of decorators. He was therefore sensitive to art from an early age, revealing a unique artistic fibre in his personality. From the age of 17, Jouve attended the École Boulle, a decorating school named after the famous cabinetmaker. At the same time, he took a theoretical course in art history.
He began his artistic career as a theater decorator. His career was interrupted by the Second World War, when he was taken prisoner by the Nazi regime in a concentration camp. He managed to escape and took refuge with relatives in Dieulefit, a pottery village in the Drôme.
After the war, he moved to Paris with his family, opened his studio and was invited by Jacques Adnet to take part in the La Céramique contemporaine exhibition.
He continued to produce until the end of his life, but also to exhibit.
Georges Jouve on the auction block
Today, no gallery has a monopoly on Georges Jouve's work. As a result, the auction market is a favored avenue for acquiring one of his vases. They are highly prized at auction, regardless of the material from which the work was sculpted. The artist's reputation is such that materials often neglected by collectors are favored for purchase, such as terracotta.
