Amalric Walter's style and technique
Amalric Walter is part of the Art Nouveau movement. He collaborated with the Manufacture de Sèvres and then Daum, producing glassware in his artistic vein.
The life of Almaric Walter
Amalric Walter (1870-1959), French glassmaker, produced works in porcelain and pâte de verre. He trained at the Manufacture de Sèvres, and early in his career produced earthenware. His work was noticed at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He also noticed the glass works on display, which inspired him to start working with glass himself.
Five years later, he joined the Daum factory, where his work became even more widely known. Together with Henri Bergé, he produced works in pâte de verre. The collaboration lasted ten years. He then opened his own glass workshop in Nancy. He also reproduced sculptures by other artists, notably Rodin. His studio closed in 1935, and his artistic output came to a halt, due to changing tastes in Europe and the onset of war.
He died in great poverty in 1959.
Amalric Walter vases on the auction block
Lately, the art market has seen a revival in the Nancy School and works by Daum and Émile Gallé. Its production is therefore quoted on the art market.
In particular, his vases are highly rated on the auction market, joining the popularity of Daum vases with collectors. Depending on the works presented on the market, Almaric Walter's vases could fetch unprecedented prices at auction, and have strong upside potential.
Recognizing Amalric Walter's signature
Not all objects produced by Amalric Walter are signed. What's more, as several artists have worked and sometimes collaborated for the Daum factory, the object may be signed with another name even though it was produced by Walter. That's why it's important to have your pieces appraised.
