Artist Takaseda Matsutani's style and technique

Takaseda Matsutani is a Japanese surrealist artist who has produced drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures.

He has produced a substantial body of work. His works are characterized by compositions in relief, the application of color over large surfaces and an artistic approach that goes further and further. In Japan, he was part of the avant-garde Gutai movement, which is why many of his works have been linked to Surrealism.

Takaseda Matsutani's career   

Takaseda Matsutani (b. 1937) is a surrealist artist born in Osaka, Japan.

He began his artistic training in 1954, at the Osaka School of Arts and Crafts. Ill, he was unable to complete his studies and taught himself Japanese painting. He took a keen interest in Western avant-garde painting and Surrealist rubbings.

He exhibited for the first time in 1957, and Shosaku Arao invited him to become his teacher. After meeting Montonaga, he joined the avant-garde Gutai group.

In 1966, he was awarded a prize from the Franco-Japanese Institute in Tokyo, which enabled him to spend six months in France. He took the opportunity to travel to a number of European countries to study Western art in greater detail, and settled in Paris permanently at the end of the 60s, while continuing to exhibit regularly in Japan. Today, he still works in Paris, which explains the presence of his work on the French market.

The legacy of Takaseda Matsutani   

Takaseda Matsutani's work is characterized by perpetual experimentation with surrealism. Today, he is not well known to the general public, but appreciated and sought after by collectors.

Although some of his paintings and drawings are held in museums in France, Japan and around the world, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.
