Jean Lambert-Rucki's career

Jean Lambert-Rucki was born in Krakow in 1888. He began his training at the city's School of Fine Arts, where he met the painter Moïse Kisling, a member of the Paris School. Panckiewicz taught him Impressionism and the legacy of the Nabis, having worked with Pierre Bonard and Édouard Vuillard in France.

He was not influenced by Cubism at the start of his career, but only discovered it in 1909 at an exhibition in Munich, where Picasso's works were on show.

Influenced in parallel by African primitive art, his work became a cross between cubism and primitive art.

After visiting a Gauguin exhibition in Krakow, he decides to settle permanently in France. He trained at the Académie Colarossi and lived at La Ruche, where he rubbed shoulders with Soutine, Chagall, Cendars and Fernand Léger - among others.

During the First World War, when he was sent to the front, he met Joseph Czaky, a Cubist sculptor who would influence his work, and vice versa.

After collaborating with Jean Dunand, he produced a number of Surrealist works in the 30s and became interested in the Art Deco movement.

He died in Paris in 1967, aged 78.

Jean Lambert-Rucki's imprint on his period

In his sculptures and compositions, Jean Lambert-Rucki reflected on Cubist art, while at the same time incorporating influences from primitive African art. His output is substantial, and today he remains a highly appreciated and sought-after artist on the art market.
