Tyeb Mehta's career

Tyeb Mehta (1925-2009) is a modern abstract artist of the 20th century.

He graduated from the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai, then joined the Progressive Artists group in Bombay, founded by Francis Newton Souza. Here, he rubbed shoulders with the greatest contemporary Indian painters, such as Maqbool Fida Husain and Vasuedo Gaintonde, who were to exert a major influence on his work.

From 1959 onwards, he worked for six years in London, where he was also naturally influenced by Western painting - particularly that of Francis Bacon. He also travelled to New York, but always chose Indian society as the subject of his paintings. He exhibits all over the world, on almost every continent.

The artist died in 2009, probably naturally.
