Artist's style and technique

A landscape painter, Makowski mainly depicted rural spaces or still lifes. He produced both post-impressionist and cubist works, crossing styles throughout his career.

Makowski, the little-known Polish painter

Tadeusz or Tadé Makowski (1882 - 1932) was born in Poland.

After graduating from Jagiellonian University and Krakow Fine Arts School, he studied painting with several Polish artists, including Jozef Mehoffer.

Like many Eastern European painters of his time, he moved to Paris in 1908, where he studied the work of Pierre Puvis de Chavanne. Two years after his arrival, he met Henri le Fauconnier, who introduced him to the cubist painters of Montparnasse. Thanks to them, he took part in the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1913. Makowski spent some time in Finistère, producing a number of marine paintings during the Great War. After this episode, he divided his life between Paris and the Netherlands, where he drew inspiration from early Flemish paintings. In Paris, he achieved a degree of recognition, exhibiting several times in galleries, notably Berthe Weil.

Tadé Makowski's imprint on his period

Tadeusz Makowski is not a well-known artist on the market, but he has produced a wide variety of works over the course of his career, representing different pictorial trends. Exhibited mainly in France, his paintings are highly valued on the art market and sought after by some collectors.
