The artist's works and style

As an artist who worked mainly in Franche-Comté during the 20th century, Robert Fernier is not attached to any particular movement. He has strong links with the painting of Gustave Courbet, and creates landscape scenes - notably montages of his native region.

He works little with prints, producing more drawings and oils on canvas.

The life of Robert Fernier

Robert Fernier (1895-1977) was a landscape painter from the Franche-Comté region.

After completing his secondary education, Fernier quickly set his sights on painting, studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Dijon. However, the teaching did not suit him, and he left to study at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, with the support of Fernand Cormon. His career was halted by the war, however, and he was drafted into the French army in 1914. In 1919, he joined Fernand Cormon in his studio until 1924, when the painter died. He produced works in his native region, and during this period painted many snowy landscapes.

His career took another turn at the end of the 1940s: like many of his colleagues, he chose to travel to the Orient. He successively visited Morocco, Algeria, Madagascar, Reunion Island, the Comoros archipelago and Polynesia, where he met his wife and settled for a few years.

He resumed painting landscapes in his native region in 1965.

Marked throughout his life by Courbet's work, and suffering a deterioration in his health, he drew up the catalog raisonné of the artist's works (who turned out to be his cousin - although he was never aware of it). Thanks to his dedication, the Musée Courbet opened in Ornans in 1971.

The artist dies in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté at the age of 81.

Robert Fernier's imprint on his period

Robert Fernier made a lasting impression on the national scene during his period, but was not extremely well known during his lifetime. However, some collectors appreciate his work, and the majority of his canvases are privately owned.
