Artist Robert Falk's style and technique

Robert Falk is part of the Russian neo-impressionist movement that is very much in vogue at auction today. He drew much of his inspiration from Western European landscapes, working extensively on shades of light and the representation of light. His canvases are inspired by the northern schools, notably through his use of chiaroscuro.

Robert Falk, a little-known but much-loved painter

Robert Rafaïlovitch Flak (1886-1958), an artist of Russian origin, became a sought-after figure among collectors, as did Krachkowsky and Bessonov.

The artist was born in Moscow and initially trained as a painter in private studios. He then studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Architecture and Sculpture, where he was a pupil of Constantin Korovine and Valentin Serov. He took part in the creation of the Vallet de Carreau, a Russian avant-garde group that rejected 19th-century realism. During this period, he was influenced by Paul Cézanne.

Inspired by the latter's analytical cubist techniques, Falk used broad flat tints of color to create relief on his canvases. He taught in Russia for some time, before moving to Paris (like most of his colleagues) until 1938.

On his return to Russia, he produced Neo-Impressionist works in the style of Valentin Serov and designed sets for the theater.

He died in Moscow in 1958.

Robert Falk's imprint on his period

Robert Falk left his mark on his era in Russia and France, although the general public no longer remembers him. Nevertheless, his technical mastery is of interest to collectors, and his works are highly sought-after on the auction market.
