The artist's works and style

An artist who was active in Provence during the 20th century, Pierre Ambrogiani is a Corsican painter influenced by the French Expressionists and Fauvists. His paintings are predominantly landscape scenes, representing reality fairly faithfully, but using large flat areas of paint and very vivid shades. However, he does not claim to belong to any particular movement.

Pierre Ambrogiani: painting Provence

Pierre Ambrogiani is a painter from the south of France, born in Ajaccio in 1907.

Born into a modest family, he spent little time in Corsica and grew up in Marseille. He began painting without any training, and founded the provincial Maison de la Culture with Antoine Serra, Louis Toncioni and François Diena. With his own studio in Marseille, he rubbed shoulders with many artists of the time, including Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, who advised him on his painting.

He is particularly renowned for his colorimetric work, using vivid colors, the same that Louis de Vauxcelles described at the turn of the century as "an orgy of pure tones".

He creates the stained-glass windows at Marseille's Immaculée-Conception church, combining religious iconography with representations of modern man.

He died in 1985 in Allauch.

Pierre Ambrogiani's imprint on his period

Pierre Ambrogiani did not make a lasting impact on the national scene, and was not very well known during his lifetime. However, some collectors appreciated his work, and the majority of his canvases are in private hands.
