The artist's works and style

Martial Raysse quickly made his mark, developing his own abstract style based on the concept of hygienic vision, resulting in a pure, sanitized rendering in keeping with the modern world.

He plays with collages and color contrasts, working with a particular concern for colorimetry.

The life of Martial Raysse

Martial Raysse (b. 1936) is a French artist. Born on the Côte d'Azur, he painted and studied literature after high school. He really began his career as an artist in 1945, creating assemblages in Plexiglas, which he exhibited for the first time alongside Jean Cocteau. He quickly became highly regarded, famous and in demand by collectors and contemporary art enthusiasts in his region.

After questioning his career, he travelled to the United States, where he found a new, realistic artistic identity.

In collaboration with Nikki de Saint Phalle, he designed the sets for a ballet by Roland Petit. In 1966, he was awarded the David Bright prize at the Venice Biennale.

After the events of May 68, Raysse reflected on the status of the work of art, and in particular its commercial aspect. His work changed aesthetically and theoretically, in an approach comparable to that of Jean Hélion.

He then produced life drawings and took on various public commissions.

Martial Raysse's mark on his period

Martial Raysse left a lasting impression on his era, notably for his many expressionist and abstract lithographs. Some of his works are exhibited in museums, but private collectors play the greatest role in their preservation. Before Pierre Soulages, he held the record for the most expensive work sold by a living French artist.
