Style and technique of artist Lee Ufan

Lee Ufan is a contemporary artist who is sometimes associated with Minimalism, but who does not confirm this proximity to the movement. He produces drawings, prints and oils on canvas, as well as ceramics.

The life of Lee Ufan

Lee Ufan was born in 1936 in the district of Haman, then under the possession of the Japanese Empire.

He studied calligraphy and poetry in Korea, in addition to painting. In 1956, he moved to Japan to study philosophy. This knowledge had a major influence on his painting. After meeting the artist Nabuo Sekine, he took his advice from him and vice versa.

In the 60s, after winning a competition, he turned more to art criticism and theory - writing about the Japanese Mono-ha movement, which aimed to represent the antagonism between natural and artificial materials. He presented his concept at the Paris Biennale, drawing on modern phenomenology.
