Lalan is an avant-garde Chinese artist who has produced drawings, prints and paintings that blend ancient Chinese techniques with modern painting. She produces fairly abstract compositions, and is influenced by the New Culture Movement emerging in China, which promotes a detachment from tradition. 

Lalan's career  

Lalan (1921 - 1995) is a Chinese avant-garde artist.

Born in Guizhou, she studied at the Shanghai Academy of Music. She married the painter Zao Wu Ki, and didn't start painting until the age of 37, thanks to the teaching of Lin Fengmian.

Lalan then moved to Paris with her husband, after spending some time in Hong Kong.  

After her divorce, she became interested in informal art and developed her painting around lyrical abstraction and calligraphic abstraction. She incorporates a certain synesthesia into her canvases, drawing on her musical knowledge and skills.

Lalan then explored the art of synthesis, returning to abstraction at the end of his career.

Lalan's imprint on his period

Today, Lalan is recognized as one of the most influential Chinese artists of the 20th century. Her paintings are highly prized by collectors and are a great success at auction. Her unique style, which blends Western influences with Chinese painting techniques, is particularly appreciated and sought-after today. Some of his works are exhibited in museums in France, but private collectors play a major role in preserving his work. His value has risen in recent years.
